2018 Bowls, Bowls, Bowls

BOWLS, BOWLS, BOWLS!

Now open ON-LINE and in the gallery at 64 Biltmore Ave, downtown Asheville

When you see something you would like to know more about, or would like to purchase, just call us at 828-281-2134.

Show will be in the gallery: OCTOBER 4 – OCTOBER 24, 2018

From the humblest bowl that fits perfectly in your hand, to the ones you proudly take to pot-lucks; all the way to that special one you traditionally use every Thanksgiving, bowls don’t just hold food, they hold memories. In October, American Folk Art will be presenting a plethora of functional pottery bowls by our distinguished regional potters, all presenting their own very personal design aesthetic. The focus will be on the beautiful possibility of form and multiple functions of a bowl. As many of you know, we represent potters whose work is more than beautiful; all of the pottery in the gallery can be eaten out of, baked in, cleaned in a dishwasher, and enjoyed for a lifetime.

Carolina Cercone: Switched majors from Japanese studies to Ceramics and has never looked back. Her dish & service ware is so hardy and lovely, many restaurants have Carolina design and create their tableware. Her stoneware is a mix of North Carolina & Tennessee clay, she fires in a gas reduction kiln which creates a controlled yet organic look. Living in Tennessee, she has acted as studio assistant at The Penland School-which is how we met her….We call her ‘the bowl queen’.

Shawn Ireland: Arriving in North Carolina to be a painting resident at The Penland School, he got hooked into the early stages of the wild clay movement through Penland teachers Will Ruggles & Douglass Rankin. His rustic bake & table ware is infused with Shawn’s love of cooking and hosting. A couple stints of living in Italy, fueled his creative juices and resulted in his charming, yet ever functional Animal-Ware.  His mix of regional clays & minerals fired in a wood kiln create earthy and stylish pottery, with fun narrative quality.

Trista Hudzik: Color, texture and joy fill every surface of Trista’s pottery. There is a preciousness to her forms and the details she adds, but each are totally functional, and ready for use. She is inspired by nature, vintage china and old scientific botanical prints. Her home and studio are here in Western North Carolina where she received an associates degree in Professional Crafts from Haywood Community College. Trista has acted as studio assistant at The Penland School, and regularly teaches at A-B Tech here in Asheville.

Kim Ellington: North Carolina’s vault of historic technique and lore, Kim studied at Haywood Technical College in Clyde NC, and returned home to Lincolnton, NC to begin his career. Trying to create [and failing] to achieve the creation of the ‘old style’ pottery of his region, he approached Burlon Craig, the keeper of all the old ways, and a neighbor!. Now Kim is the keeper and generous sharer of the regional traditions. North Carolina clay, wood-fired: A luscious combination of the old ways totally at home in our contemporary lives.

Rosa & Winton Eugene: Self-taught are artists who use NC clay as canvas. Their pottery is elegantly crafted providing surfaces ready for scraffito or tiny brushstrokes to add narrative history, family ties, natural beauty… While each piece in this collection is fully functional, they are so elevated in form and content we doubt they will be relegated to a cabinet when not in use.  Rosa & Winton Eugene are the only African-American potters that I am aware of who are still working in the Piedmont Folk pottery tradition, but their pottery goes well beyond any tradition; The Eugenes are creators, experimenting and expanding the genre. Recently they were individually awarded the honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts by The University of South Carolina, yes indeed.

Kim Ellington and Shawn Ireland have individual pages on our website, check them out, too!
