Rosa & Winton Eugene are unique among potters for like a million reasons. The are completely self-taught, nearly unheard of in the craft of pottery. They are also such recognized positive forces in South Carolina that they have recently been awarded Doctor of Fine Arts Degrees from the university system of higher education in South Carolina. You will notice on their recent pottery they are signing them with that new distinction.
They have been making pottery together since 1986, having both finished successful careers they taught themselves how to produce these beautiful and functional pieces.
Each piece is individually made either pinched or thrown, and they painted with loving care by Winton. Fired mostly in their electric kiln, the stoneware clay they use is of North Carolina origins and are meant to be used, as well as enjoyed as a presentation piece….the delicate paintings and decorative elements reflect their interests, value and lives.
Aside from the Doctorate of Fine Arts, their pieces have brought them many accolades and awards: They have been included in many important museum shows: ‘Afrilachia! Where I’m From’, Santa Fe New Mexico’s Museum of Folk Art permanent collection, as well as Southern Living, American Craft and At Home Magazines.
