Kent Ambler Kent Ambler's work is largely autobiographical, drawing upon the richness of his home life and natural surroundings. His work is lovingly infused with images of his wife, Peg, his dogs, townscapes, scenes which lingered with him after being with friends, trees, birds, and contemplative self-portraits. However, regardless of how seemingly subject-focused his work may appear, it is the beauty, tone, and overall aesthetic, scale, and perspective of each piece which seduce the viewer with a sense of balance and comfort. Kent shares "the visual appearance of each piece is of most importance to me. I work from an aesthetic and intuitive approach rather than a conceptual one... I try not to over think or over plan my work. I generally do best when my brain is "turned off" so to speak. I am inspired by the simplicity of idea and image addressed by genuine folk artists." While Kent did go to art school, he feels it did not affect the work he currently does today. "I was born an artist. College afforded me the opportunity to make work for four years." His woodcuts are a true example of a craft and vision expressed unaffectedly. Each woodcut brings to life a memory and feeling which then becomes palpable in his prints. Each print, essentially, is original and unique. Some of his prints may involve the making of up to five or six individual woodcuts, depending upon how many colors are involved in the image. Also, considering the reverse transfer of images from woodcut to paper and the carving of "negative space" to form the image itself, one can really begin to fathom the true genius behind his wondrous art.
