Walt Simpson Walt Simpson, resident of North Carolina, is inspired by the people, history and landscapes of this region, as well children's and outsider art. His images of neighborhoods are like quilts of interconnected color and texture. Some neighborhoods take on a personality, reflective of the people who may live there. Houses represent the smallest elements within community, thus referencing what we hold most dear. "I have seen houses in low income neighborhoods painted with bold, bright colors, beautiful and ironic, like flowers pushing through the cracks of pavement. These houses seem like ideal subjects to paint, representing hope and grace in unlikely places. In my work, the land and houses and communities represent my roots: mill-town houses, rural landscapes and present changes." Themes of time and seasons, colors and numbers move through his work, influenced by stories of old-timers reminiscing about the past. "I want viewers to feel the invitation to walk down the street or sit on these porches" |
