Caroline Cercone A native of Germany, Caroline earned her Master of Arts in Japanese Studies from Phillipps University. Her interests in Japanese folk crafts led her to study the Japanese folk pottery of Hamada Shoji and Bernard Leech. While working with clay in Nashville, TN, she heard about The Penland School of Crafts in western North Carolina. She became the studio assistant to McKenzie Smith--a resident instructor. While there, she also studied with Will Ruggles and Douglass Rankin. They all share an interest in the same Japanese traditions and masters. Caroline creates pottery using a treadle wheel. This wheel is important to her pots. It is slower, and gives more control over the speed. It makes her put more of her energy wholly into the piece and therefore, the piece expresses more. Caroline's handsome pottery reflects her interest in functionality, affordability and maintaining the craft. |
