John Simmons It's been awhile since we've added a new potter to the gallery, but it was worth the wait. American Folk welcomes John Simmons. It's been a joy to hold his pots and place them amongst his contemporary's work...somehow it all works beautifully and why wouldn't it...they look all at once modern... Picasso-ish even...playful...how about that angel crawling around the bottom of that whiskey jug? A quickly rendered baby bird, his beak open at the lip of a cup, ready and grateful to receive. John Simmons is a first generation potter and fifth generation Texan. He has exhibited his work nationally, participating in solo, invitational, and juried shows. John began working with clay in 2004. In 2008, he was awarded a full scholarship to attend a two-week workshop at Penland School of Craft. That summer was a pivotal point in John's ceramic career, when he realized that making pottery was something he could do every day. John uses stoneware and porcelain clay bodies to produce functional, salt-glazed pottery. He employs various techniques by layering slips and glazes to create unique imagery on the pots. "I try to capture the connection between life and objects in my artwork. The pottery is the object and the images are life. The choice to make objects that serve a function fortifies my attempts to convey life..." John lives in Montgomery , AL with his beautiful wife where he keeps an active studio.
