McKenzie Smith

McKenzie Smith began his college education as a music major, studying as he played in jazz bands and orchestras. During this pursuit, he took a ceramics class as an elective, wanting to make a series of hand-built horns and whistles. He soon progressed to making functional ware and was inspired by teacher Sylvie Granatelli. While working on his undergraduate at the University of South Florida, Tampa, he completed a student position at the Penland School of Craft in western North Carolina. At Penland, he studied with many masters, learning tech- niques and glaze recipes. Smith went on to receive his masters degree in ceramics from the University of Florida in Gainesville. Since then, he has been involved with a variety of commissioned kiln building projects along with teaching at workshops nationwide. He continues to create his own functional pottery, firing with soda and wood. "My work is influenced by folk traditions and involves an interest in a varitey of thrown forms and the use of slips, wax resist, and glazing techniques. I'm hoping that these in combination produce ware that has a warm feel in flavor and gives pleasure in use."
