Mike Ball Mike Ball lives and works in the Catawba Valley Region of North Carolina. The Catawba region is home to rich traditions in the making of pottery and face jugs. The clay is still hand-dug and wood-fired in groundhog kilns, just as it was in the 19th century. Mike learned his trade from Kim Ellington, who had learned from the local and legendary master, Burlon Craig, the last potter experienced with the earliest traditions of the region. Mikes face jugs feature carved, flower-like pupils, which add a fanciful flair to their countenance. He also creates an assortment of ulilitarian ware. |
