Shane Mickey

Shane Mickey earned his BFA from Frostburg State University in Western Maryland, and his MFA at the University of Tennessee. He and his wife, Lisa, now live in Western North Carolina.

His pottery is wheel-thrown and altered using several different clays. The work is fired in a large Anagama kiln which holds 500-600 pots per firing. The kiln takes three to four days for loading, 60-70 hours for firing and a week for cooling. Seashells and bits of clay laced with sawdust are used to separate the pots during firing. Sometimes these separators are fused to the pottery by ash and these battle scars can be evident on the pieces. This is not considered a blemish or flaw but rather an enhancement and unique part of the process.

"I work with the weight of past and current ceramic images on my shoulders. I am after the discovery of my pots, my place, my language, in this rich continuum of clay history. The work is rooted in functional design while expressing ideas for spontaneity. The act of daily work at the wheel, kiln, etc. is for me, the same as a mechanic, doctor or teacher. It is a life lived. I gain warmth and energy from daily successes and failures, allowing me to create pots that are alive, full of energy and full of humility."
