Marian Kaminkow Marian Kaminkow was born in London, England in 1922. As a teenager she learned Esperanto, a type of experimental international language which combines a lot of different languages and was developed in the hope of making communication easier among different countries. Fired with idealism she acquired correspondents in Spain, Romania and the U.S.A. During the war she dropped out of college and became a land girl, working on a farm. In 1943 her American correspondent’s best friend, now a GI, landed in England and got in touch with Marian and started a friendship, which continued by mail and lasted thru and after the war with only rare meetings on both sides of the Atlantic. They married in 1953 and after raising a family, started a small business producing reference books on genealogy. Marian dipped into several areas of self-expression before discovering wood carving around age 70. After a few introductory lessons at the local Senior Center, she went her own way, studying the work of some of the great European wood artists and reading the experiences of other carvers. Now at age 89, a day rarely goes by without her gouges, and chisels in her hands. Her work is sweet and often whimsical with reoccurring scenes of animals and nature. |
