Liz Sparks In her own words: “The power that pottery has to enhance and influence its environment is the foundation that drives me to make it. The pots I make are designed to activate the energy of interior spaces by communicating specific themes or ideas. Elements, animals, plant life, cycles and patterns are all at the forefront of my imagination. I use locally dug clay, and for me this material is a starting point: an initiator of ideas, forms and surfaces. I am conscious of the life force of the earth as I shovel, screen and prepare it for use. The search for clay integrates me, the potter, into society through conversations, stories, and shared clay histories. Local clay offers me a cultural root, and commercial ingredients are amendments that encourage the clay's flexibility. I make decorations and patterns from colored clay slips by using traditional slipware techniques. I study images of old pots for fuel, and I observe my environments for inspiration. Rather than seeing "nature" and "civilization" as opposing environments, I perceive them as different manifestations of similar structures, with human beings relating as integrated participants. As I'm working, I'm thinking about similarities between neural pathways in the brain, veins in a leaf, and invisible intersecting cell phone lines, and about cycles and lines that connect all of us to the earth and to each other. |
