Liz Sparks "I create stoneware and porcelain pottery that is designed for use in the home. I throw on a Korean style kick wheel that I built because I enjoy the engagement of my whole body while I am working, and I feel a connection to the clay. The clay is my own recipe that I mix with 25% local red clay. The red clay creates a slightly sandy, open texture. Sometimes when I lay the clay out to dry in wooden rack, I will discover a sprout or two growing in it. This excites me because it is a reminder that the clay is alive! The routine of pottery making is grounding to me. I enjoy using hand mixed clay and a kick wheel because of my personal involvement. In my potting career, I have been inspired by the Mingei school (a term meaning 'Japanese folk craft') in which the beauty and usefulness of an object are of equal importance. I aim to create pottery that has both of these characteristics. I interact with pottery on a daily basis, whether in the making or in the use. I study the stroke of a brush, or feel the texture of a foot on a bowl, and notice the little things. They remind me to be present and celebrate life."
