Mark Hewitt The son of the director of Spode, Ltd in England, Mark Hewitt decided to settle in North Carolina in 1983 while visiting southern folk potters. He found a farm near Raleigh, which had a good supply of local clay (he often blends three together) and a good supply of wood for his wood-burning kiln. Mark is known for his enormous pots that are designed to stand outside and brave the wind and the weather and that become integrated into the landscape where they reside. His forms, whether the large outdoor vessel or the smaller functional pot, are quick, trim and athletic; architectural and flowing on the outside and adorned with sublime accidents only the wood-burning kiln can deliver. He is adamant about using local materials, and his kiln is a modified version of a 14th century kiln from northern Thailand. Mark’s work is in the collections of the National Arboretum (DC); the Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution (DC); the Mint Museum of Art (Charlotte); and The Chrysler Museum (Norfolk, VA). His pots have been featured in Smithsonian Magazine and the Wall Street Journal. |
