Matt Jones

Matt Jones is a young potter living in the mountains of Western North Carolina. He has been particularly influenced by traditional pottery, especially the old Southern, alkaline-glazed wares made throughout the Carolinas and beyond. His decision to fire with wood and to make pottery that is functional reflects his interest in those old pots.

Specifically, Matt has had three mentor relationships that have shaped his development as a potter. Mike Thiedman at Earlham College taught him about the legitimacy of making pottery for a living. Todd Piker in Connecticut taught him all the practical skills involved with throwing pots and firing large, wood-burning kilns. And Mark Hewitt in North Carolina taught him about form and decoration. As influential as these three mentors may have been, Matt has refined his work into a distinct style with a number of signature pieces such as large bells and umbrella stands.
