Josh Copus In 2005, Copus received an undergraduate research grant through UNCA for a proposal entitled 'Recreating Tradition: An Observation of the Effects that Local, Non-Industrially Processed Ceramic Materials Have on the work of Contempory Ceramists.' In 2006 he received a Windgate Fellowship Award through the Center for Craft, Creativity and Design to build a kiln and set up a studio in Western NC. Both of these grants have funded Josh's work with local materials, both wild clay and locally-sourced decorative materials, which continue to be strong themes in his process. "Clay is a material accepting of impression. It acts as a record of all processes, from its creating in the earth ti its final transformation in the fire. The us of locally harvested wild clay increases my participation in the creative process. This active connection to my materials is the most vital source of inspiration in my work. Like the clay I use to make them, my pots are a reflection of my life. They represent my personality, experiences and dreams. |
