Cornbread

Cornbread, as John Anderson is known to his family and friends, was raised on a farm in Lumpkin County, Georgia, He had no interest in painting until 1995, when he started painting his life experiences on pieces of wood and cardboard. Using bright acrylic colors and preferably large pieces of wood, he captures what is quickly being pushed out of rural Georgia by sprawling Atlanta.

Cornbread’s foxes and guinea hens are his most widely recognized animals, but he paints a veritable menagerie which includes crows, raccoons, turkey, quail, woodpeckers, deer, his dog and cat, beaver and more.

Other than animals, the peoples and situations he has been personally involved with often motivate Cornbread’s work. He has worked as an undercover cop, a big rig mechanic and a beekeeper, all of which have given him a variety of characters to capture in paint. He also paints local legends such as the Three-Toed Booger Holler and political statements inspired by current events.

All of this said, Cornbread is a man who paints because of his passion. His humor, honesty and modesty make him one of the best new folk artists of the south.
